Reinforcing Positive Behaviors
Want to teach your dog how to sit or lay down? Your dog already knows how! It's up to us to reinforce those positive behaviors!

Hi, it's Wesley again from Thousand Hills Pet Resort and Gentle Touch Pet Training on Training Tip Tuesday.
Today we're going to talk about how to reinforce positive behaviors. This one's going to sound really basic but it's something that people tend to forget and it's good to remember. And that is, everything that you're teaching your dog, every skill, every command, your dog already knows how to do it!
And so right now, Lady just laid down and so what I would tell her is "what a good down. Thank you." So what I'm doing is I'm continually giving that association with what she did to the word that I'm giving it to. The more that I reinforce it, every time, the easier it is for her to learn.
So if I'm just hanging out and she happens to sit, I'm going to say "great sit. I love it when you sit." If she goes and lays on her bed, I'm going to say "wow, you went to bed. That's fantastic. Good girl."
I'm going to continuously do that and in the end, it's going to solidify in her mind and she's going to know what I'm talking about. Thank you.
